I normally try to discourage new student from attempting to sculpt mechanical objects. However this student was adamant about wanting to do a “portrait” of his beloved car. So he drove it around to where he could see it clearly from his workstation and over the next few days he successfully sculpted a well-executed image.
We see here the image before completion, and how it was decided to focus in upon just the front (the most recognisable part of a Morgan car) in order to achieve the best composition. An attempt to sculpt the whole car upon such a small piece of stone would have resulted in a weedy-looking image with little or no aesthetic merit.
A very accomplished stone carving was achieved by this student.
The stone used for this piece was rescued from a local stonemason company's skip
